Vanta vs Drata for HIPAA Compliance
On HIPAA alone, Vanta and Drata are closer than most comparisons admit. Both map the Security Rule to controls, pull evidence from your systems, test those controls continuously, train your workforce and track your vendors’ BAAs. The real differences are packaging: Vanta puts a basic Trust Center in its entry Essentials plan and claims 400+ integrations, while Drata sizes its Foundation plan for up to 50 employees with HIPAA as an allowed single framework and sells Trust Center separately. Neither prints a price.
Both are built for business associates such as SaaS and health-tech vendors. A medical practice with no cloud stack to connect is usually better served by the platforms in our HIPAA compliance software comparison. Last verified 2026-10-25 against each vendor’s own pages.
Lean Vanta If
You sell a trust story
A basic Trust Center sits in the entry Essentials plan, and Vanta names a HITRUST path from e1 to r2
Lean Drata If
You want HIPAA named
Foundation names HIPAA as an allowed single framework, on a plan sized for up to 50 employees
Pick Neither If
You run a practice
A clinic with no cloud stack to connect gets more from a healthcare-specific compliance platform
FIG · 01Vanta vs Drata at a glance
Every cell below comes from the vendor’s own HIPAA, pricing, frameworks and help pages, read on 2026-10-25. Counts are the vendors’ own claims, not our tally. Both platforms are built for business associates with software to connect, which is why the integration counts matter more here than on any clinic-facing tool.

How each one runs a HIPAA program
Strip the marketing and both do the same four jobs: map the policies, pull evidence from your systems, test controls on a schedule, and track workforce training. The difference is in what each vendor chooses to say first.
Vanta
Turns HIPAA requirements into prescriptive controls, policies and tests, then watches them.
- Adaptive scoping: controls apply only to the systems and people that touch PHI
- HIPAA-ready policies from auditor-reviewed templates, edited in the app
- Built-in HIPAA and security awareness training for the workforce
- HIPAA evidence reused toward SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR
- Vendor list with risk scoring and document collection, BAAs included
Drata
Maps privacy and security controls to continuous evidence with a named owner for each.
- Shared controls and evidence reused across frameworks
- AI explanations of failing control tests tied to HIPAA requirements
- Policy reviews, approvals and version history kept over time
- Embedded HIPAA training that issues a certificate on completion
- Third-party risk workflows that rate business associates against HIPAA
The one wording gap worth a question
Vanta’s HIPAA page names the Security Rule and the Breach Notification Rule. Drata’s names privacy and security controls. A business associate also carries Privacy Rule duties through its BAA (45 CFR 164.502: use and disclosure limits, minimum necessary). On either demo, ask which Privacy Rule items the HIPAA framework actually tests, and which stay a written policy.
Plans and what a HIPAA quote covers
Neither vendor publishes a dollar figure, so the plan ladder is the only public lever. For a company whose only framework this year is HIPAA, both entry tiers can carry it. Drata says so by name on Foundation; Vanta’s Essentials lists “one compliance framework” without a restricted list on its plans page.

The platform is not the audit
Vanta lists access to its auditor network and the option to bring your own auditor; Drata centralizes auditor collaboration. In both cases the assessor is a separate party, so budget the assessment apart from the subscription. Price figures quoted on third-party blogs are not confirmed by either vendor, which is why we do not repeat them.
Which one fits your company?
Five questions. The answer is a shortlist and the questions to put to each vendor, not a winner: on HIPAA alone the two are too close for a quiz to call.
Vanta or Drata fit check
1.Do you handle PHI for providers or health plans as a vendor (a business associate)?
2.Does most of your stack run on cloud and SaaS tools you could connect (AWS, Google Workspace, GitHub, an identity provider)?
3.Do customers ask you for a security portal or trust page before they sign?
4.Are you under 50 employees, with HIPAA as the only framework this year?
5.Are hospital or health-plan customers asking you for HITRUST?
What neither platform does for HIPAA
A compliance platform holds the program. It does not make the decisions the Security Rule puts on you.
45 CFR 164.308(a)(1)(ii)(A)
The risk analysis is still yours
The rule asks for an accurate and thorough assessment of risks to ePHI. Both tools give you a risk register to hold it; neither knows where PHI really flows in your product. Start from a risk assessment template and load the result into whichever platform you pick.
45 CFR 164.308(a)(8)
There is no HIPAA certificate to buy
The Security Rule asks for a periodic technical and nontechnical evaluation. It creates no government certification, so an auditor report produced through either platform is evidence for your customers, not a federal stamp. Our HIPAA audit checklist shows what an evaluation covers.
45 CFR 164.308(b)
Your own BAAs still need signing
Both platforms track vendor documents, BAAs included. Neither drafts or signs them for you. Keep a BAA template ready for subcontractors, and ask each vendor whether its own integrations could ever pull PHI, which decides whether you need a BAA with the platform itself.
45 CFR 164.308(a)(6)
An incident still needs a person
Continuous monitoring flags a failing control. It does not run your response or the breach notification clock. Write the incident response plan before the first alert.
Takeaway: buy the platform for evidence and monitoring. Keep the risk analysis, the BAAs and the incident plan as documents your team owns, so they survive a switch from one vendor to the other.
Drata vs Vanta: eight questions for the demo call
Ask both vendors the same list, in the same order, and the quotes become comparable. Print it and take notes in the margin.
Demo-call checklist
- 1
Which plan carries HIPAA as our framework, and at what headcount does the price step?
Drata Foundation stops at 50 employees; Vanta quotes after a demo.
- 2
Which Privacy Rule items does the HIPAA framework test, and which stay a policy?
The two HIPAA pages describe their scope in different words.
- 3
Is the Trust Center in this quote, and at which tier?
Vanta bundles a basic one in Essentials; Drata sells it separately.
- 4
Which of our systems connect natively, and how many HIPAA controls stay manual?
The integration count only matters for the tools you actually run.
- 5
Could any integration pull PHI into your platform? If so, will you sign a BAA?
Evidence such as logs or tickets can carry PHI if scoping is loose.
- 6
Is the auditor's fee inside or outside this quote?
Both route you to a separate assessor.
- 7
What does the HITRUST path cost if a hospital customer asks for it next year?
Both list HITRUST; moving up from HIPAA alone changes the scope.
- 8
How is workforce HIPAA training delivered, and does it reset each year?
Both embed training; Drata documents annual resets and certificates.
